Lady Gaga never fails to surprise or impress. Apparently, her recent message to her fans — and presumably everyone — is that abstinence is OK. While she hasn’t been as overtly sexual as other recording artists, Gaga definitely exudes sexuality, so her message does seem odd.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this – don’t have sex,” Gaga said in England, where she is promoting MAC’s Viva Glam Campaign to fight AIDS. “It’s okay not to have sex, it’s okay to get to know people,” she says. “I’m celibate, celibacy’s fine.”

Giving her the benefit of the doubt and taking her message at face value, I can get behind Lady Gaga’s campaign. There’s a lot of pressure — especially for young people — to have sex. The misconception is that if you do not have sex then you are somehow a loser in society. I can’t think of any current popular celebrities who are promoting abstinence and celibacy and it’s nice to see this lifestyle being represented. It’s also amazing that someone as big as Lady Gaga is getting the message out.
