With the success of the film Avatar and the prevalence of IMAX 3D theaters it comes as no surprise that Nintendo is jumping on the 3D bandwagon. It is surprising, however, that their multi-dimensional offering will be a hand-held gaming machine. The last time the video game company tried this was with the poorly received Virtual Boy that literally had gamers seeing red while and after playing.
What’s most intriguing about the new 3D Nintendo hand-held is its proposed ability to deliver 3D graphics without the need for special glasses.

Kyoto-based Nintendo said the new device, which is temporarily being called the Nintendo 3DS, is scheduled to launch during the coming fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The new system will also play current Nintendo DS games.
In a brief and unexpected statement, Nintendo released no additional information about the coming device’s price or functionality. The company said it would provide more details in June at the videogame industry’s annual E3 convention held in Los Angeles.
